Connector activation is a journey, not a setup event
A practical model for separating configuration completion from the first dependable exchange of value.
A connector can be technically configured and still never become useful. Treating the final setup click as activation hides authentication failures, empty syncs and workflows that users abandon before value appears.
Define activation as a short chain of observable states: connector discovered, setup started, credentials accepted, first valid object transferred and a meaningful repeat action completed. Your exact states should reflect the connector’s promise rather than a generic funnel.
Measure elapsed time and fallout between states. Segment by connector, account maturity and setup route, but preserve a stable top-level definition so comparisons remain honest. Pair counts with diagnostic reasons such as permission denied, mapping incomplete or no eligible records.
The result is not another dashboard. It is a shared operational definition that helps product, engineering and customer teams identify where a connector stops becoming useful—and who can change that outcome.
